Kanha National Park

Located in Madhya Pradesh, Kanha is one of India’s most renowned tiger reserves, covering around 940 sq. km of core area. Known for its thriving wildlife, scenic landscapes, and excellent safari experiences, it is a must-visit for nature and wildlife lovers.

Originally established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1933, Kanha was declared a National Park in 1955 and later included under Project Tiger in 1973. The area was once a hunting ground for British officers and local rulers, but it has since become a global model for wildlife conservation. Kanha’s most notable achievement is the successful revival of the hard-ground Barasingha (swamp deer), which was on the brink of extinction. Thanks to dedicated conservation efforts, the Barasingha population has now recovered significantly, and the species thrives in the park’s grasslands. Kanha’s pristine beauty also inspired Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, making it a legendary name in both literature and wildlife circles.

Kanha features lush sal forests, bamboo thickets, open grasslands, and seasonal water bodies. This mix of habitats supports a wide range of mammals and birds, making it one of the most biodiverse parks in India.

Mammals: The park is home to Bengal Tiger, Leopard, Swamp Deer (Barasingha), Gaur, Sambhar, Spotted deer (Chital), Barking deer, Black Buck, Chousingha, Nilgai, Mouse Deer, Sloth Bear, Jackal Fox, Porcupine, Hyena, Jungle Cat, Python, Indian Hare (Black-naped Hare).

Birds: Over 280 bird species can be seen here, including Crested Serpent Eagles, Indian Rollers, Malabar Pied Hornbills, Jungle Owlets, and a variety of waterbirds and migratory species.
